Artful, Luminous Chaos

Erica Quitzow’s second full-length CD, Art College, comes out on June 10 on Young Love Records. One of our favorite records of the year, Quitzow sings while ingeniously playing moog/Rhodes/bass and creating loops from drum beats, moog sounds, violins, guitars, cellos, as well as loops of her own voice. One reviewer described Quitzow as “combining the fun of Peaches with the intelligence of Lori Anderson” and “Solex meets Liz Phir, but with more rhythm!”

Quitzow incorporates a vibrant range of influences to her music and performances and her instrumentation is impressive: MPC, Reason, live drums layered with Moogs, Korgs, Rhodes, Casios, classical and electrical guitars, bass, cellos, violins, and an array of percussive implements are spliced together with her uniquely expressive vocal stylings.

Art College was recorded and tracked in Erica’s home studio in Hudson Valley, New York. Her band and label-mate Gary Levitt helped with production and mixing. The songs flow together like a dense montage: pop ditties, orchestral arrangements, dashes of hip hop, electro clash, and trip hop entwine creating a psychotropic aural landscape.

Erica is involved in a number of musical projects including Setting Sun, with whom she will tour the U.S. and Europe this summer and fall. The upcoming national tour will feature a 5 piece band, including cello, live and electronic drums, bass, backing vocals and percussion. With all her latest successes and people like Portia Sabin at Kill Rock Stars talking about Quitzow - we know that the future is at her feet and we’ll be seeing much more of this fabulously talented woman!

Wonder Girl

We fell in love with Quitzow right away! Her music can be plotted on a continuum alongside Julie Ruin, Cannonball Jane, Listen With Sarah, Oly, Kate Wax, and other multi-instrumentalist/ songwriter/ composer/solo-recording genii.

We received just four tracks on a CD-R: the "pre-release sampler" from Erica Quitzow's upcoming second release. Every song is solid - and distinct - ranging from dusky and introspective, experimental indie art pop-- to highly danceable electro-pop. And be sure to listen carefully: along with the drum beats, bleeps and blips, you'll hear guitar, violin, cello and bass and perfectly infused surprise sounds.

Erica also plays moog, cello and drums in the band Setting Sun. We will be checking out that project right away and are anxiously await the arrival of the full-length scheduled to release this spring!
